THAT HIDEOUS STRENGTH...FILM NIGHT

Monday 22 June, 8pm

3049 20th St, San Francisco

"THE MAN WHO LAUGHS", 1928 with "THAT HIDEOUS STRENGTH"

"The Man Who Laughs" is a 1928 American silent film directed by German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni. The film is an adaption of Victor Hugo's novel of the same name. The film is known for the grim carnival freak-like grin on the character Gwynpaine's face. So steeped in Expressionist gloom that it plays like a horror film.

Spitalfields Festival: Familiar/Unfamiliar

16 June 2014, 8-10pm, Village Underground, 54 Holywell Lane, Shoreditch, London EC2A 3PQ

Familiar/Unfamiliar: a programme of newly commissioned works for piano, instrumental ensemble and speaker, by five composers: Chris Newman, John Lely, Catherine Kontz, James Saunders, and Michael Parsons.

Featuring Tania Chen (piano), Stewart Lee (speaker), Ilan Volkov (conductor), with Magnitude Music ensemble of 10 instruments, including flute, clarinet, horn, trombone, violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, percussion (tbc).

The programme will embrace a wide stylistic variety, from indeterminacy and use of graphic notation to systematic minimalism, revealing affinities with the experimental music of Cage, Cardew and Feldman, while also exploring new approaches to the medium of piano and instrumental ensemble.

Each new work will be 10 - 15 minutes in length, and the full programme (including interval) will be c.90 minutes.

With the participation of writer, broadcaster, and comedian Stewart Lee as speaker/narrator/commentator this promises to be an exciting and unusual programme of works exploring the further reaches of the concerto form.

With acknowledgements and thanks to PRS for Music Foundation for funding to commission these new works especially for this occasion.

Machynlleth Comedy Festival

4 and 5 May, Machynlleth, Wales (Link)

Hello campers! Why not wake up to playful experimental music in a beautiful 18th c Methodist chapel? In 1959 the composer John Cage read, in random order, a selection from 90 stories, each timed to last a minute, while David Tudor improvised at the piano in another room. In two inevitably completely different performances, the comedian Stewart Lee will read Cage's stories, while Steve Beresford and Tania Chen take Tudor's role, working spontaneously in the moment with piano, electronics, toys and found objects.  The trio are utterly delighted to be able to bring Indeterminacy to the Machynlleth Comedy Festival as the final dates of Indeterminacy's 2014 tour.

"Lee's ability to deconstruct and denature comedy .... is carried over into Indeterminacy thanks to Chen and the arch-surrealist Beresford, creating the effect of a soundtrack undertaken with due seriousness, but gone horribly wrong." Brian Morton, The Wire.

Steve Beresford is a composer and improvisor who has played with, amongst many others, Alterations, The Slits, The Flying Lizards, The Frank Chickens, Vic Reeves, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker and The Portsmouth Sinfonia.

Tania Chen is a concert pianist specialising in experimental and improvised contemporary music, and has collaborated with and performed alongside AMM's John Tilbury, Andrew Poppy, Michael Nyman and Gavin Bryars.

Stewart Lee is a stand-up comedian and writer, who regularly tours the UK with one-man shows and has recently completed a 3rd series of his Comedy Vehicle for BBC2.
