I am delighted to be invited to play with Carla Harryman and Jon Raskin this evening where we will be improvising music to text and poetry. Carla Harryman and Jon Raskin have collaborated on numerous occasions and have recorded their duo album "Open Box" on the Tzadik label. It will be an honour to share their sound world with them tonight.
"This will be a two-set evening curated by Rova saxophonist Jon Raskin. The first set will be a performance of Raskin's "Gardener of Stars, an Opera". This is based on an improvised score that reworks the text of both Carla Harryman's 2001 novel of the same name. Both Raskin and Harryman will perform, joined by special guest Tania Chen. The second set will present the Sheldon Brown Ensemble, performing material from two of Brown's projects. The first is Blood of the Air, a suite based on the poetry and speech melodies of the late surrealist poet Philip Lamantia. The second is Distant Intervals, also speech melodies, this time by Ivan Arguelles, Clark Coolidge, and Andrew Joron."
